The Bar Council of India [BCI] has finally notified the revised syllabus for the upcoming seventh All India Bar Examination [AIBE VII] to be held on July 27, 2014. Prior to this, the Council had drastically revised the syllabus and examination pattern for the fourth AIBE conducted in November 2012 and the said syllabus remained in effect for a total of three AIBEs [IV, V & VI] only.
The syllabus for the seventh Bar Exam [AIBE VII] can be accessed here.
The Council has retained all subjects of the old syllabus and has re-introduced two subjects: ‘Environmental Law’ and ‘Public International Law’ which were present in the first ever syllabus of the Bar Exam. Apart from this, ‘Cyber Laws’ and ‘Corporate Social Responsibility’ have also been added to the new syllabus and the subject Company Law has now been updated to ‘Company Law 2013′ ending any and all doubts regarding the relevancy of studying the old Companies Act.
Thus, apart from the four new subjects and some changes in the distribution of marks per subject, the new syllabus is identical to the previous syllabus followed in the last three AIBEs. The examination pattern [Marks, Time Limit, etc.] remains the same too. A tabular comparison between the old and new syllabus can be found here.
However, more unsettling than the constant change of syllabus is the Council’s decision to not provide any Model Question Paper for the upcoming Bar Exam like it did during the fourth AIBE [AIBE IV]. The Council has already stopped providing any study material for the Bar Exam and a Model Question paper based on the new syllabus would have been helpful to candidates planning to the take the upcoming Bar Exam.
